The northern Indian states of Punjab and Uttarakhand went to poll today to elect their next state legislative assemblies. The Punjab Assembly has 117 seats and the Uttarakhand Assembly 70 seats. Voting is electronic but on a booth-wise data basis. Counting in the two states will be taken up on March 6 along with the counting for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Goa. Manipur went to poll on January 28, Goa goes to poll on March 3 and Uttar Pradesh, the most populous Indian state, goes to poll in seven phases from beginning of February to March 3. Simultaneous counting for all the states going to polls around the same time is to ensure that voting pattern in a state which goes to polls first does not impact on the outcome in the other states.
