EU Pushes India To Agree To A Peak Year In Emission Cut

New Delhi, Feb 4, IRNA - Pushing India and other developing countries to agree to a 'peak year' in greenhouse gas emissions, the European Union said 'very difficult and very unpleasant discussions' would be required to achieve the ambitious global targets by 2050. EU climate chief Connie Hedegaard insisted that agreeing to 'peak year' by India would be in its own interest as it is one of the regions 'most exposed' to global warming. 'I think what we need now is to try to agree to a global peak year. We have tried that conference after conference after conference,' she told reporters here Friday. 'Let me now make a secret of that...It is a very very difficult issue that I just say that we have come to the point now discussing the emission gap.. and discussing the way forward. We also have to start this very difficult and very unpleasant discussion,' the EU leader said. Referring to India, she said the impact of climate change costs it a lot. 'I think that India (would have) to come to discuss this global peak thing. I mean I have to discuss with the Chinese and others as well,' Hedegaard said. She said everybody understands why a continent like India with 1.2 billion people has around 400 million people without energy./end
