UN general assembly to debate Syria

UNITED NATIONS (A.A) - February 13, 2012 - The United Nations General Assembly will debate the situation in Syria on Monday. UN Security Council, during a meeting on February 4, rejected a draft resolution supporting a peace plan of Arab League in order to stop violence in Syria due to veto of Russia and China. Many countries in UN General Assembly want to take action in Syria issue. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is preparing a draft resolution on Syria to present it to voting in general assembly. According to AA correspondent, the draft was very similar to the one which was earlier prepared by Morocco and rejected by UNSC. The draft resolution expresses deep concern about the situation in Syria, ongoing violation of human rights and violence towards people by Syrian authorities. It calls on Syrian administration to end human rights violations and attacks on civilians as well as to protect its own people and fulfill responsibilities under international laws. Extending a strong support to sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, the draft resolution said that it is necessary to solve political crisis in Syria in a peaceful way. It condemns Syrian authorities as they use force against civilians, arrest, kill and torture people. What is different in this draft from the vetoed one is that it requests UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to assign a special representative to solve the crisis in Syria in a peaceful way, and demands a technical and financial assistance of UN for Arab League observer mission.
