Minister Proposes Denpasar Be Named Creative City By UNESCO

Denpasar, Bali, Oct 7 (Antara) - The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has proposed to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) that Denpasar be named a creative city. "Hopefully the proposal will be accepted. Denpasar has so far been included in the Indonesian Heritage City Networking (JKPI)," Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Dharmawijaya Mantra said on Monday. Creative economic businesses, such as the batik `endek` industry have flourished in Denpasar, he added. Balinese students in the area have also designed a computer program in Balinese characters. The special computer using these characters will be launched in the near future. Denpasar is a member of the Organization of World Heritage City (OWHC), which includes more than a thousand cities globally. In Indonesia, only the cities of Denpasar and Surakarta in Central Java are members of the OWHC. Denpasar has also established sister city cooperation with the city of Katsuragi in Japan.
