Viettel breaks ground on large scale data centre in Vietnam

Hanoi, April 25 (VNA) - The Viettel Group officially commenced work on construction of its High-Tech Data Centre and R&D Complex in Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park, Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City on April 23.

The project is set to become one of the largest data centres in Southeast Asia and the first in Vietnam to reach hyperscale capacity.

Covering nearly 4 hectares, the facility is designed with a total capacity of up to 140 MW and approximately 10,000 racks. Once operational, it will be the first data centre in the country to exceed 100 MW, putting it on par with global hyperscale facilities.

The project launch coincides with the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of national reunification (April 30, 1975 – 2025).

The data centre will be developed to Uptime Tier III standards and will feature an average power density of 10 kW per rack, 2.5 times the national average with some racks reaching up to 60 kW to meet the demands of high-performance computing and AI applications.

To support such power density, the centre will integrate advanced cooling systems and AI-powered management technologies developed by Viettel. It aims to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of below 1.4, signaling high energy efficiency.

According to Viettel, the Tan Phu Trung facility marks a major milestone in the group's digital infrastructure strategy, aligned with national goals under the Politburo's Resolution No. 57 and Prime Ministerial Decision No. 36 on ICT infrastructure planning.

Vice Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Vo Van Hoan expressed high expectations for the project, describing it as one of the region's largest and most strategic digital infrastructure investments. He emphasised the significance of such facilities in building a smart city and digital government, and in promoting innovation and economic sustainability.

Once operational, the centre is expected to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, 5G, IoT, blockchain, and cloud computing, while also fostering a digital innovation ecosystem, high-quality digital workforce development, and job creation in the digital economy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Viettel Chairman and CEO Major General Tao Duc Thang underscored that the new facility represents a critical component of the group’s broader digital infrastructure network, which includes 15 existing data centers across Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Duong.

Viettel also plans to complete the deployment of 20,000 5G base stations by the end of this year, covering 95% of urban population centers. The company reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out the project with the highest standards in speed, discipline, and quality. Phase 1 is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2026, with full completion scheduled before 2030./.
