Jeddah's Great Reef: Vibrant Red Sea Marine Heritage

Jeddah, May 03, 2025, SPA -- Situated 24 kilometers off the coast of Jeddah, the Great Reef is a significant 6-square-kilometer marine reserve along the Kingdom’s western coast, showcasing the Red Sea’s vibrant coral reef heritage, diverse marine environments, and rich natural formations that reflect the beauty and complexity of marine life.
Beyond its natural structures, the Great Reef contains cavities and holes formed by resident marine organisms through local mechanical weathering. Despite the impact of natural factors like sea currents, tides, and waves, as well as some human activities, the reef's waters remain remarkably pure, providing a thriving environment for coral growth and diverse marine life.
Saudi Geological Survey spokesperson Tariq Aba Al-Khail emphasized that the Great Reef remains a dynamic marine ecosystem supporting a wide array of organisms. He noted its importance as a key anchoring spot for small vessels and a favored habitat for seabirds.
While clarifying that the coral formation is a natural aggregation rather than a true island, Aba Al-Khail highlighted its special tourist appeal, attracting visitors for swimming, recreation, diving, and underwater exploration. He also underscored ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness among tourists and to ensure the preservation of this unique natural landmark.
