Samsung Heavy wins 2.1 tln-won LNG carrier orders from 2 Oceania shipowners

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Heavy Industries Co. said Monday it has clinched two orders worth a total of 2.1 trillion won (US$1.52 billion) to build six liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers for two shipowners in Oceania.

The vessels, four for one client and two for the other, will be delivered in phases by November 2028, according to the South Korean shipbuilder's latest regulatory filings.

With the latest deals, Samsung Heavy has achieved 49 percent of its annual order target of $9.8 billion.

The company has won orders for seven LNG carriers, nine shuttle tankers, two ethane carriers, four crude oil tankers, two container carriers and one offshore production facility module so far this year.

"Demand for eco-friendly ships is expected to remain steady amid the International Maritime Organization's decision to introduce a global carbon tax in shipping," a Samsung Heavy official said. "We will continue to seek selective orders with a focus on profitability."
