The meeting, held at the UN headquarters in New York, addressed cooperation between the United Nations and the League of Arab States, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The meeting was attended by Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq; and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States.
The Security Council side was led by Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, which holds the Council presidency for the current session, in the presence of the foreign ministers of the Council’s member states.
In his statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated Bahrain’s steadfast support for all joint Arab efforts aimed at strengthening the role of the League of Arab States as a unified Arab framework, and emphasised the importance of strengthening channels of communication with the Security Council to advance international peace and security.
He said the meeting was being held at a time of escalating challenges in the Arab region, foremost among them the continued absence of a political solution to the Palestinian issue that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He reiterated adherence to the unified Arab position calling for the establishment of the Palestinian state in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, stressing the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of hostages and detainees, and the acceleration of humanitarian aid delivery.
The Minister underlined Bahrain’s belief in the importance of strengthening cooperation between the League of Arab States and the Security Council to address other crises in the region, including Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, and Somalia, through dialogue and diplomatic solutions that preserve the unity and sovereignty of states and fulfil the aspirations of their peoples for security and development.
Jamal Fares Al Ruwaiei, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, and Shaikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended.
