Temperatures stay below zero for days
SEOUL, Jan. 14 (Yonhap) -- A prolonged cold snap has kept temperatures in Seoul
and other regions across the country well below zero over the past week, with a
morning low of minus 14 C in the capital on Thursday, the country's weather
agency said.
Seoul recorded minus 14.4 C, slightly up from minus 15.3 C on Wednesday, said the
Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
Cheorwon, a town in Gangwon Province close to the border with North Korea, hit
minus 24 C, while Chuncheon, 85 kilometers east of Seoul, marked a temperature
reading of minus 20.9 C.
Morning lows have failed to breach the minus 10 C mark for the last week since
record heavy snowfall paralyzed the country's capital on Jan. 4. Temperatures in
Seoul have hovered around minus 13 C for four consecutive days.
More snow is expected overnight and into Friday morning in Seoul and the
surrounding Gyeonggi Province, while the cold weather will linger on across the
peninsula for several more days before giving way to warmer temperatures, said
the KMA.
The agency forecast that the cold spell is expected to ease around Saturday as
daytime temperatures should rise above zero.
