Chronology of events related to outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in S. Korea


SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronology of the events related to
outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in South Korea.

Mar. 20, 2000 -- The first outbreak of FMD in South Korea is confirmed among two
milk cows at a stock farm in Paju, north of Seoul.

Mar. 25, 2000 -- Quarantine officials from state-run veterinary research and
quarantine agencies form a joint emergency team.

Mar. 26, 2000 -- Government orders the culling and burial of 15 milk cows
afflicted with FMD in Paju.

Mar. 27, 2000 -- The government inspects 225,000 heads of livestock within a 20
kilometer radius of the FMD infected farm.

April 15, 2000 -- Fifteen cases of FMD are discovered in cattle at Hongsong,
South Chungchong Province, and Chungju, North Chungcheong Province. A total of
2,216 heads of cattle are culled in six cities in three provinces.

Aug. 31, 2001 -- The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) recognizes South
Korea as FMD free country.

May 2-June 23, 2002 -- Fifteen cases of pig and one case of cattle FMD are
confirmed in four cities and counties. A total of 160,155 heads of livestock are
culled.

Nov. 29, 2002 -- South Korea is listed again in the official OIE list of FMD free
countries.

Nov. 28, 2009 -- The U.S. recognizes South Korea as free of FMD and cattle plague.

Jan. 7, 2010 -- South Korea confirms an outbreak of FMD in six milk cows at a
farm in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province. Authorities cull and bury 298 head of
livestock raised within a 500 meter radius of the dairy farm.

Jan. 14, 2010 -- The government confirms a second FMD case in two "hanwoo" cows
at a farm in Pocheon, 3.5 kilometers away from where the first outbreak of FMD
was reported. It culls and buries 1,790 heads of livestock.
