Daewoo Electronics steps up foray into S. Asian market

SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) -- Daewoo Electronics Corp., South Korea's third-largest
electronics maker, said Thursday it is stepping up its business presence in India
and other South Asian markets as part of efforts to become a global company, the
company said Thursday.

Daewoo signed a contract with Rahimafrooz Ltd., Bangladeshi's largest retailer,
at a Dhaka hotel on Wednesday to sell US$2 million worth of its products, it
said.
The South Korean company plans to sell its products in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan
through local retailers while selling refrigerators and microwaves in Pakistan on
an original equipment manufacturer basis, it said.
The electronics maker will reopen markets in India, where it closed its branch in
2003, with washing machines as its flagship products in May, the company said.
"We are conducting market research to reenter India's market, expecting sales of
washing machine to reach $450 million," a Daewoo official said. "We will
strengthen our product line including refrigerators and microwaves next year," he
added.
Daewoo hopes its sales in South Asian markets will reach $10 million this year,
it said.
