PRESIDENT ASKS PEOPLE NOT TO HAMPER INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Jakarta, Jan. 15 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for cooperation of the community in general not to hamper land provision for infrastructure projects.

The development of infrastructure projects intended to serve the people's interest must not be hampered because some people want irrationally high compensation from the government, the president said here on Friday.

The head of state made the statement when inaugurating an agrarian strategic programs for people's justice and welfare at Marunda Coast, Cilincing, North Jakarta.

However, Yudhoyono also reminded the government agencies concerned that people whose lands were used for infrastructure projects should be compensated reasonably.

"Sometimes, some projects are stopped, such as toll roads and other public facilities, because one or two plots of land which could not be solved. As a consequence, the infrastructure projects meant to serve the public interest, were stopped, hampered, and could not be continued, and this disadvantages all of us," he said.

The head of state also asked the people not to seek the services of middlemen to obtain compensation for their land if they did want to be defrauded..

"Middlemen act as if they help the people, but actually they don't. They help themselves. If a project is hampered, if middlemen are involved, the people will lose, and the nation will lose too," he said.

President Yudhoyono on the occasion also asked the National Agrarian Agency to improve its services for all people. He also called for acceleration of legalization of land belonging to both the people and the government.

The inauguration of the agrarian strategic programs for people's justice and welfare was marked by the launching of public services for land certification (Larasita) in the form of a motor boat to serve the inhabitants of Seribu (A Thousand) Islands, which are located in the Bay of Jakarta.

Larasita program has so far covered around 60 percent of the Indonesian land territory. The head of state hoped that the program could reach 100 percent of the Indonesian people.

The president on the occasion symbolically presented land certificates to farmers, fishermen and scavengers. BPN provided 1,533,277 certificates at the event.***
