30th int'l school for Koreans opens in the Philippines
(ATTN: ADDS comment in para 5, CORRECTS location in para 2)
SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- An international Kindergarten and high school for
Koreans living in the Philippines will officially open in March, a foundation
said Sunday.
The Korean School Foundation Philippines Inc. (KSFP) said it will launch the
school in Taguig, near the capital city of Manila.
The school is adding Kindergarten and high school to the elementary and middle
school courses that started last September, it said. South Korea's education
ministry gave final approval for the full curriculum last year, it said.
Filipino and Korean teachers teach classes in both English and Korean, foundation
officials said.
"Except for the subject of the Korean language, students will be able to opt for
classes either taught in English only, or in both English and Korean," Kim
Seong-mi, the newly appointed principal, said.
The 30th international school for overseas Koreans was set up with a US$5 million
investment from local residents and the education ministry.
The first such school set up by overseas Koreans was in Osaka, Japan, in 1946.
