S. Korean relief team to start helping Haiti earthquake victims this week
SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean emergency relief team will start work
this week to help earthquake victims in Haiti, the government said Sunday.
The National Emergency Management Agency said the 25-person team was preparing to
move to Haiti by land after arriving in neighboring Dominican Republic the same
day.
"The team plans to employ ground-penetrating radar, active scope cameras and
special sonars to find people buried in the rubble in the aftermath of the quake,"
the agency said in a news release.
The South Korean team including seven medical doctors and nurses, administrative
support personnel and two rescue dogs will set up a relief center in Haiti's
capital, Port-au-Prince, for a 10-day operation, the agency said.
Its operation involves treating victims and assistance in the search for
survivors following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Caribbean
island nation last week.
The group is seeking protection from Brazilian troops during its stay in Haiti,
the agency said.
Separately, South Korea is sending US$1 million worth of relief supplies to Haiti.
