POLICE TO BUILD SECURITY POST IN JEMUR ISLAND

Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia, Jan 17 (ANTARA) - Riau police will build a security post in Jemur island in response to the local authorities' plan to resettle residents to the island to which Malaysia once laid a claim.

"There has been a village head office in Jemur island. In line with the resettlement plan we will build a security post there," Riau provincial police spokesman Adjunct Chief Commissioner Zulkifli said on Sunday.

He said the plan surfaced when chief of the Riau provincial police Brig. Gen. Adjie Rustam Ramdja, along with local officials visited the island some time ago.

During the visit, Adjie said as a strategic outlying island located in the Malacca Strait, Jemur was susceptible to criminal offenses.

"Because of their strategic location, outlying islands including Jemur island in the Riau territory are vulnerable to a wide range of criminal offenses, such as smuggling, illegal logging, illegal fishing and drug transactions," he said.

Therefore, he said the Riau provincial police would station any of its personnel to the islands to reduce the number of criminal offenses there.

The 2.5 square km Jemur island came under the spotlight last year when a number of websites reported the island as part of a tourist destination of the Malaysian state of Negeri Selangor.***
