S. Korea, Uruguay start talks on double-taxation avoidance deal

SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Uruguay launched their first round of
negotiations Monday on a deal aimed at avoiding double taxation for companies of
each nation in their bilateral trade, Seoul officials said.

The talks started in Montevideo, the capital of the southern American country,
for a three-day run between high-ranking tax policymakers from the two nations,
according to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
The negotiation is a follow-up move on the promise that leaders of the two
nations made in September last year to push for a double-taxation avoidance deal,
the ministry added.
The deal is being pushed as Uruguay has high growth potential as a lucrative
investment destination for South Korea companies down the road, the ministry
said.
Currently, South Korea's government has signed such deals with 79 countries,
according to the ministry.
