Reports of unfair stock market activity up 14.6 pct in 2009
SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's financial watchdog said Monday that
reported cases of unfair stock market activity, including price rigging and
insider trading, rose 14.6 percent in 2009 from the previous year.
Such cases reported to the watchdog and the bourse operator reached 235 last
year, compared with 205 a year earlier, according to the Financial Supervisory
Service.
Reports of unfair trade in derivatives came in at 21 in 2009, up 250 percent from
the previous year, it added.
Unfair practices in the stock market include rigging share prices, using
undisclosed information in trading and failing to report ownership of a large
number of stocks.
There were 45 cases of stock price manipulation last year, with those in the
country's tech-heavy KOSDAQ market accounting for 73.3 percent of the total, the
watchdog said. There were 49 cases involving the use of undisclosed information
to gain profits.
