PRESIDENT ASKS TRADERS NOT TO RAISE PRICES
Ngawi, E Java, Jan 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked Monday large manufacturers and traders not to arbitrarily raise the domestic prices of commodities although the prices of goods abroad are on the rise.
"I ask large-scale manufacturers and traders not to raise prices too quickly much less to unreasonable level," the president said when inaugurating a number of infrastructure projects here.
He said when fuel oil prices were raised the prices of almost all commodities went up. But when the fuel oil prices were lowered the prices of commodities did not go down.
"If fuel oil prices are lowered the prices of other commodities must be lowered too. I call on (large businessmen) to pay attention to the people by not raising prices to an unreasonable level if oil prices fluctuate," he said.
The head of state also asked regional governments to launch market operations to stabilize prices if the prices of basic necessaries such as rice, sugar and frying oil were on the increase.
Commenting on the government's first 100 days program, he said the program was the first step to advance to the next programs in five years' time.
"Many have misconstrued the program. Some people said it must improve the people's living standard. It is not proper to assess success only from the first 100 days but let us look at the condition five years ahead," he said.
Also present at the function were Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto, Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi, National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh, Agriculture Minister Suswono and Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan.
