PRESIDENT HAS NO PLAN YET TO RESHUFFLE CABINET: MINISTER
Jakarta, Jan 18 (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Radjasa said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had until now no plan to reshuffle the cabinet.
"So far, the president has never talked about a cabinet reshuffle. I hope the media will stop speculating about this matter," Hatta said.
The issue of a cabinet reshuffle arose soon after the government's bailout of troubled Bank Century caught the public's attention. The case involves Finance Minister Sri Mulyani as former chief of the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK), the institution responsible for issuing the bailout policy.
The cabinet reshuffling issue also emerged due to some disappointment from the people towards the government's 100 days of working plan which was considered not meeting its initial target.
"There is no need for a cabinet reshuffle since the last evaluation on the cabinet's working target shows that up till the 75th day, the government has achieved more than 90 percent of its targets," Hatta added.
In response to the cabinet reshuffling issue, especially the replacement of the finance minister, economist from Bank BNI Tony Prasetiantono said the government must react carefully.
"If Sri Mulyani is really proven to be wrong in the bailout policy, replacing her as the minister will be seen as good decision. If not, it will have a counterproductive impact on the government," Tony said.
He suggested that the related authorities investigate whether or not Sri Mulyani had conducted a fatal mistake by issuing the bailout policy on Bank Century.
The government would face a negative response from the national market if it replaced Sri Mulyani without clear evidence she was at fault in the Bank Century case.
Tony also suggested that the government not to make any political deal as the basis for a cabinet reshuffle.
"Government's policy will then be considered as not credible. The government will find it hard to influence the market in the future," he said.
