Samsung Digital Imaging targets 15 pct of global camera market
(ATTN: ADDS more details from para 3)
SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Digital Imaging Co., the camera-making
affiliate of Samsung Electronics Co., said Tuesday that it is aiming to capture
15 percent of the global market for compact cameras this year, up from 12 percent
last year.
The chief executive officer told a press conference that Samsung also aims to
claim 50 percent of the domestic camera market this year.
Samsung, which unveiled its new hybrid camera model Tuesday, said that it will
take advantage of its strong retail network and step up its marketing efforts to
achieve the goal. The new model will go on sale next month, it said.
With its release of the hybrid camera model, the NX 10, Samsung will compete with
Japanese rivals Olympus Corp. and Panasonic Corp. for the global market for new
cameras where demand is expected to grow sharply.
The global market for hybrid cameras, which include features of both compact and
digital single-lens reflex cameras, is forecast to increase from 1 million units
this year to 9 million in 2015, according to Samsung.
Samsung claimed about 10.8 percent of the global market in 2008, it said.
