NO INCREASE IN CHINESE PRODUCT IMPORTS VIA PANNING PORT

Bandar Lampung, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - Since the coming into force of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement on January 1, 2010, there has been no increase in imports from China through Lampung`s Panjang Port, the port`s administrator, HTP Hutasoit, said.

"Until now, Panjang Port`s export and import activities are still normal. There is no sign of an escalation," he said here Tuesday.

Importing activities were still running normally, as well as goods delivery from the main international ports in southern Sumatra.

In the meantime, many Chinese products continued to invade Bandarlampung such as textiles, leather, electronic goods also fruits and vegetables.

Due to their low prices and variety, the Chinese products were attracting many buyers who are free to make their choice. To cope with Chinese products invasion, the chairman of the Indonesian Employers` Association (Apindo) Lampung, Joseph Kohar, appealed to the local government, business and banking communities and other related agencies in Lampung to work together in overcoming the Chinese products` invasion.

"The Chinese products` invasion can only be overcome by increasing the domestic products quality and competitiveness. The local government should be more involved in encouraging domestic companies to produce more and compete in the Lampung trade area," he said recently.

The ASEAN free trade agreement with China took effect last January 1, 2004 through the "early harvest" program, with the tariff reduction for agricultural products, including vegetables, nuts and fruits.

Since January 1, 2010, the ACFTA implementation process had entered its stage I Normal Track (NT) in which 7,306 tariff entries were reduced to zero percent.
