RI REPATRIATING 425 PROBLEMATIC WORKERS FROM MIDDLE EAST

Jakarta, Jan 19 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will on Wednesday repatriate 425 problematic migrant workers from Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, a minister said here Tuesday.

"Bringing them home is the government`s commitment to meet a target of its 100-day program," Coordinating Minister for the People`s Welfare Agung Laksono said.

He said Indonesia had been doing its best to minimize the number of problematic migrant workers by improving the recruitment and protection system.

One of the things that caused migrant workers to eventually meet problems abroad was the misconduct of people who had recruited the workers in their hometowns, such as the issuance of false identity cards, he said.

With the return of the 425 workers from the three Middle Eastern countries, the total number of troubled Indonesian migrant workers who had brought home had reached more than 2,000 or more than the government`s target of 1,350.

According to Agung Laksono`s deputy, Maswita Djaja, the government had previously repatriated 1,423 migrant workers from Kuwait and the Saudi Arabian city of Riyadh.

Among the problems Indonesian workers faced abroad were related to unpaid salaries, expired working visa, and criminal charges, he said.

Before being flown home, the troubled laborers were temporarily sheltered at Indonesian embassies or consulates while waiting for the completion of their travel and legal documents.

Due to limited accommodations and budget constraints, they were then brought home in stages, he added.

Indonesian workers do not only fill the casual workforce markets in many Middle Eastern countries but also in Asia, such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong (China).

In Malaysia, more than a million Indonesians were working in such sectors as construction and plantations.
