Lee plans to embark on a four-day visit to India on Sunday, his first overseas
travel this year, during which he will hold a summit with Prime Minister Manmohan

Ruling party floor leader slams Chief Justice over controversial ruling
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- The ruling party's floor leader on Wednesday demanded
that the Supreme Court's chief justice take responsibility for what he called
"left-leaning of judicial branch", citing a controversial court ruling acquitting
an opposition lawmaker who stood trial for committing violent acts in parliament.
"Chief Justice Lee Yong-hoon should make public his position on the matter and
take responsibility for the left-leaning, unjust judiciary crisis," Ahn Sang-soo,
floor leader of the ruling Grand National Party, said at a meeting of the party's
special committee on judiciary reform.

Court rules "not guilty" in the case of MBC's U.S. beef report
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- A Seoul court Wednesday ruled in favor of five staff
members at national TV broadcaster MBC, who were indicted on charges of defaming
government officials with a controversial report critical of the administration's
decision to resume U.S. beef imports in 2008, judging that they are "not guilty".
Four producers and a script writer at MBC had been indicted in June 2009 without
physical detention a year after Seoul's agriculture ministry filed a complaint
with the Supreme Prosecutors' Office accusing them of airing a biased report on
the safety of U.S. beef.

S. Korea's national debts grow on stimulus policies
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's national debts grew sharply last year
from a year earlier mainly due to the government-led expansionary fiscal measures
aimed at bolstering the sluggish local economy, preliminary data showed
Wednesday.
According to the data offered by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, the
nation's total debts amounted to around 360 trillion won (US$319.4 billion) last
year, up 51 trillion won from a year earlier. This marked the sharpest on-year
growth on record, it added.

S. Korean bio industry output tops 4.5 tln won in 2008: report
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's bio industry grew 21.4 percent on-year
in 2008 with production totaling 4.51 trillion won (US$3.99 billion), a
government report said Wednesday.
The report by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said exports by local biotech
companies jumped 29.4 percent annually from 2007, reaching 1.90 trillion won,
while imports gained 12.3 percent to 1.14 trillion won.

KT&G Q4 net drops 38 pct on sluggish domestic sales
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- KT&G Corp., South Korea's biggest tobacco company,
said Wednesday that its fourth-quarter profit declined 38 percent from a year
earlier mainly due to a fall in domestic sales.
Net profit reached 138 billion won (US$122 million) in the October-December
period, compared with 223 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a
regulatory filing.

Samsung Electronics to pay Rambus $900 mln for new license deal
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest memory
chipmaker, said Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with Rambus Inc. on a
new license deal that would cost the South Korean company US$900 million and end
a five-year legal battle over memory chip technology.
Under the new agreement, Samsung will initially pay $200 million as a royalty to
the Los Altos, California-based technology licensing company for using its
semiconductor technology, the South Korean company said in a filing.
