Gov't reports 2 suspected foot-and-mouth disease cases
SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- The government reported two more suspected cases of
foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Wednesday, as quarantine workers scrambled to stem
its spread.
Owners of two dairy farms in Pocheon and Dangjin who were raising a total of 171
cows reported FMD symptoms earlier in the day, the farm ministry said.
It said the farm in Pocheon north of Seoul is 11 kilometers away from the site of
the first outbreak that was reported Jan. 7, with some milk cows developing
blisters. The farm had been under observation, and on-site quarantine inspectors
ordered the culling of 43 head of cattle as a preventative measure.
The case in Dangjin, 123km southwest of the capital city, involved a single
animal that had a fever and was salivating profusely.
Experts at the site said the animal might have inflammation of the intestines,
not FMD, and decided to wait for detailed test results before taking additional
steps. There are 128 milk cows on the farm.
The latest reports raised the number of suspected FMD cases reported in the
country to 11. Of the total, five farms have tested positive for the disease.
The ministry, meanwhile, said more than 3,500 cattle, hogs, goats and deer have
been culled and buried this month.
