Thick fog cripples airports

SEOUL, Jan. 20 (Yonhap) -- Almost all inbound and outbound flights at Gimpo
Airport north of Seoul were canceled or delayed due to thick fog Wednesday, the
Korea Airports Corp. (KAC) said.

According to the KAC, an alert for the airport's surrounding area was issued
earlier in the day, as visibility was measured at 200 meters in some areas.
As of 7 p.m. (Seoul time), 80 outbound flights, including eight international
flights, and 79 inbound flights, including seven international flights, were
canceled, the KAC said.
It was still unclear whether the airport could be normalized within the day, as
the alert was extended until 10:00 p.m., the KAC said.
Meanwhile, Incheon International Airport also experienced cancellations or delays
of 18 and 74 inbound flights, respectively, during the day, with 17 and 110
outbound flights canceled or delayed, respectively, according to the KAC. The
airport, however, returned to normalcy at 6:50 p.m., when the low visibility
alert in its area was lifted.
