S. Korea, Spain to hold friendly in June
SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Spain will have a friendly match in
Austria in June, just ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa, Spain's
football chief said Thursday.
The friendly match between South Korea and Spain, No. 1 in the FIFA rankings,
will be held June 3 in Innsbruck, Austria, said the president of the Royal
Spanish Football Federation, Angel Maria Villa, after meeting with his South
Korean counterpart, Cho Chung-yun, in Seoul. Cho is the president of the Korea
Football Association.
Villa arrived in South Korea on Wednesday for a three-day visit to boost
cooperation in the sport with South Korea.
South Korea recorded one draw and two losses in three A-matches against Spain.
In the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, South Korea defeated Spain on spot kicks in
the quarterfinal match. But officially it was recorded as draw.
South Korea is scheduled to have a warm-up with Ivory Coast in March before
taking on Argentina, Nigeria and Greece at the South Africa World Cup set to kick
off June 11. Spain is grouped with Chile, Switzerland and the Honduras.
