Second S. Korean medical team arrives in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE/SANTO DOMINGO, Jan. 21 (Yonhap) -- A second group of South Korean medical workers arrived in Haiti on Thursday and were preparing to set up an independent clinic in the quake-stricken nation's capital.

The 18-member team consisting of doctors and nurses from Seoul's National Medical
Center and medical staff from the defense ministry arrived in Port au Prince from
the Dominican Republic and began preparatory work, including a survey of
candidate sites for the clinic.
Kang Sung-zu, South Korea's ambassador to the Dominican Republic who also
oversees Seoul's ties with Haiti, accompanied the Korean medical team to the
Haitian capital and is seeking to meet with local officials to discuss aid to the
devastated nation, according to diplomatic officials.
A separate six-member relief team formed of officials from South Korea's ruling
Grand National Party also left the Dominican Republic for the Haitian capital.
Tens of thousands of people have been confirmed dead since the small Caribbean
nation was hit on Tuesday last week by a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake. A
6.1-magnitude aftershock struck on Wednesday.
A team of South Korean relief workers who have been engaged in search and rescue
missions in Haiti since Sunday is scheduled to conclude its activities on Friday
before returning home later in the weekend.
