Korean relics to be displayed at Russian museum

SEOUL, Jan. 22 (Yonhap) -- Hundreds of cultural relics and paintings spanning
Korea's 5,000-year history will be displayed at a major art museum in Russia
later this year, the National Museum of Korea said Friday.
The flagship South Korean museum in Seoul said it signed an agreement with the
Hermitage Museum, a leading public art museum in Saint Petersburg, to hold a
Korean exhibition there from June 1 to Sept. 5.
"Korean relics, at this large a scale, have never been exhibited in Russia yet.
We consider this exhibition a first step, an opportunity to introduce a
comprehensive view of Korean art so that in the future we may present more
specific collections," said Yang Hee-jung, a curator of the Seoul museum who is
organizing the exhibit.
Titled "Wind in the Pines: 5,000 Years of Korean Art," the exhibit will present
about 350 artifacts and paintings from the prehistoric age to the Joseon Dynasty
(1392-1910), the last Korean monarchy before modernization.
Golden artifacts from the Silla Dynasty, Goryeo Dynasty celadon and folk
paintings from the Joseon era will be among the items on display, the museum
said.
