DEFENSE MINISTRY TO REINVENTORIZE ASSETS

Jakarta, Jan 22 (ANTARA) - The Defense Ministry will re-inventorize all of its assets, including problematic or allegedly misappropriated plots of land, a spokesman said.

"There are not many cases like the one involving retired Brig. Gen. Herman Sarens but we need to reinventorize our assets," Deputy Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin told Antara.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's inspection of the readiness of the Presidential Security Guards Force (Paspampres) here on Friday, Sjafrie said all persons who were no longer active in the military but still controlling Defense Ministry or National Defense Forces (TNI) assets should immediately return them.

"They must. If they are no longer active in TNI, they have to return the assets at their disposal when they were still active," he said.

He added that state assets belonging to the Defense Ministry and TNI but still in the hands of those who were no longer active should be returned to the ministry and TNI to support their main tasks in protecting national security and integrity.

Sjafrie made the statement when accompanying President Yudhoyono in an inspection of Paspampres at its headquarters here on Friday.

Meanwhile, President Yudhoyono in his directives to all Paspamres members said they should always be in a state of preparedness to face ever heavier challenges to come.

"There are at least four challenges the Paspampres will face in the next five years," the head of state said.

The president said his activities in serving the state and nation would increase in the next five years.

"The next five years will be my last term in office and therefore I will be more active in carrying out my duties in serving the state and nation, both at home and abroad," the president said.

Yudhoyono added that in the coming years many international events would be organized in Indonesia, namely an Asean summit in 2012 and an APEC summit in 2013.

He said many heads of state and government would attend the Asean and APEC summits in Indonesia.

"In addition, the Papampres should increase its alertness because the threat of terrorism against me, such as the character assassination planned by certain elements a few months ago, has not abated," he said.
Therefore, the president said, Paspampres should continue to update its armament systems.***
