Chinese products dominate foodstuffs deemed unsafe

SEOUL, Jan. 22 (Yonhap) -- Chinese products accounted for the largest portion of
foodstuff imports to South Korea last year that were deemed unfit for human
consumption, the government said Friday.
According to the Korea Food and Drug Administration, a total of 255,345 cases of
food imports was reported last year, of which 1,233 cases or 0.5 percent were
confirmed to be unfit for eating and sent back to their producers.
Chinese products took up the largest portion of the unfit foodstuff with 452
cases or 37 percent found to be uneatable. The United States and Japan followed
with 12 percent and 7 percent, the food safety watchdog said.
Of the total, 721 cases were processed food products, while 330 cases were
uneatable due to harmful containers or external packages. Health-enhancing
products came next with 114 cases reported to be unfit for eating, it added.
