CHIEF MINISTER REMINDS PETISI 28 OF LEGAL CORRIDORS
Jakarta, Jan 22 (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Djoko Suyanto reminded "Petisi 28" on Friday of the need to respect legal corridors in the rally they plan to stage on January 28.
"They can go ahead with their plan. Is it not that the government has so far never banned people from holding demonstrations," he said at a press conference after attending a cabinet meeting to evaluate the implementation of the government's program in the first 100 days of its term led by Vice President Boediono.
He reiterated that the government had never banned people to hold demonstrations to express their aspirations so long as they were carried out according to the law.
"They may hold rallies but they must respect the legal corridors," he said.
Djoko said that demonstrators must also not be selfish but have to consider the rights of people who do not participate in the activity as well.
"This is important so that people will not become worried when demonstrations happen," he said.
The chief of the presidential security unit, Brigadier General Marciano Norman, on a separate occasion said his unit was ready to anticipate any eventualities with regard to the planned demonstration by Petisi 28.
"We are always on the alert, prepared and ready to meet any development including the worst scenario," he said after the commemoration of the unit's 64th anniversary.
Marciano said he had always coordinated with other agencies concerned such as the Jakarta military and police commands to deal with actions like the one to be carried out by Petisi 28.
Petisi 28 consisting of student, youth and community elements plans to conduct a demonstration at the conclusion of the first 100 days of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration.***
