RI-US INTERFAITH MEETING TO TAKE PLACE IN JAKARTA
Jakarta, Jan 22 (ANTARA) - A group of religious and civil society leaders from Indonesia and the United States are to meet here next week to strengthen interfaith cooperation, a government official said.
The meeting on January 25-28 would provide the participants with opportunities to improve their mutual understanding, Teuku Faizasyah told reporters here Friday.
The Indonesian foreign ministry's spokesman said that Foreign Minister Marty M.Natalegawa was scheduled to officially open the interfaith dialogue.
"It is the first interfaith cooperation for the US and Indonesia though the two countries have been involved in information sharing on religious lives within the respective countries since 1970," he said.
The participating religious and civil society leaders and academicians of different faiths would focus their talks on such issues as how to empower religious moderate, deal with misperception and stereotypes, and promote harmony within different civilizatons.
The Jakarta meeting was also expected to help participants find ways of promoting better educational and governmental cooperations, and dealing with poverty and climate changes.***
