EXPERT : NUCLEAR, GEOTHERMAL MAIN ENERGY SOURCES
Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, Jan. 23 (ANTARA) - Nuclear and geothermal are main energy sources, not alternative ones, according to Marwansyah Lobo Balia, an expert staff of the energy and mineral resources ministry.
The Indonesian people would never choose nuclear and geothermal if they were always considered as alternative sources, and their faith would be like the alternative medicament, he said here on Saturday.
"This is why up to now the energy type is not much chosen by the people, and its development is slow," he said.
Sharing Marwansyah's opinion, Surya Darma, chairman of the Indonesian Geothermal Association, considering those energy as alternative was a big mistake and it should be corrected.
Otherwise, this nation would never use them as national energy sources, he said.
"In the international world, there is no such thing called alternative energy, what exists is renewable energy. If we want, fossil fuel should become alternative energy," Surya Darma said.
He said Indonesia had a very limited energy sources, such as oil which was only a half percent of the world's reserves, while the country's population was the world's fourth largest.
Besides, Indonesia has faced energy crisis, especially electricity as the nation relied heavily on fuel. The state power plant PLN had to spent around Rp30 trillion annually to by fuel, he said.
To address that problem, the energy and minister resource ministry would optimize the usage of mixed energy up to 2025, namely by conversion and diversification of energy sources, he explained.
"We will optimize energy which has not been used so far, such as geothermal and nuclear energy, as well as coal up to ten folds, so that we could cut the emission by 16 percent," Marwansyah said.
He suggested that geothermal energy should be made the nation's main energy source which is sustainable, renewable, and environmentally friendly, and having a closed cycle. ***
