QUAKE HITS SAUMLAKI



Bandarlampung, Jan 24 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit Saumlaki in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku on Sunday but it did not trigger a tsunami.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 12.30 western Indonesian time was located 240 km southwest of Saumlaki at a depth of 100 km, according to information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activities.

Maluku province lies at the meeting point of the country's two main chains of volcanoes.
