S. Korean aid for Haiti tops $15 million

SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's government and private aid to Haiti came
over to US$15 million as of Monday, surpassing its original target by over 50
percent, the country's foreign ministry said.

Seoul earlier pledged $10 million in both government and civilian assistance to
the Caribbean country devastated by recent quakes.
"We have collected over $7.8 million in donations from the private sector as of
today, which by far surpassed our original target of $2.5 million," ministry
spokesman Kim Young-sun said in a press briefing.
"This puts the combined aid of the government and private sector for Haiti to
over $15 million as of now," he added.
Kim also said the government has agreed to take part in the United Nations' flash
appeal for food, water, shelter and medicine.
In addition to financial and medical assistance to Haiti, Seoul is also moving to
dispatch a group of some 200 troops on a peacekeeping mission.
A 10-member government survey team will head for Haiti this week and return early
next month after field inspections that will help determine where the troops will
be stationed and what their main tasks will be, ministry officials said.
