S. Korea clarifies emission targets to U.N. body
SEOUL, Jan. 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korea submitted its emission reduction target on
Monday to a United Nations body to meet the Jan. 31 deadline set under a global
climate accord, Seoul's trade ministry said.
According to the ministry, the government sent information detailing the
voluntary steps that it will take to help reduce global warming to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and expressed its willingness to
join the so-called Copenhagen Accord reached last month.
The accord set the deadline for rich nations to specify 2020 emission targets and
poor countries to state actions being taken to reduce greenhouse gases by that
time.
In November, South Korea said it wants to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30
percent from its forecast, or business as usual (BAU), level in 2020 compared to
2005.
If there are no sudden fluctuations in energy prices or economic growth, overall
greenhouse gas output by South Korea could fall slightly to 569 million tons in
2020 from 594 million tons in 2005, the government said.
