Lee due in Switzerland after concluding state visit to India

By Lee Chi-dong

NEW DELHI, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) -- After a four-day visit to India marked by a milestone deal on Seoul-New Delhi ties, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak was to head to Switzerland on Wednesday for his debut on the global stage as the chair of this year's G-20 economic summit.

Lee, accompanied by a delegation of high-powered political and business figures,
will visit the headquarters of world football governing body FIFA later in the
day to meet its president, Sepp Blatter, according to Lee's office Cheong Wa Dae.

Lee plans to ask for Blatter's support for South Korea's bid to host the 2022
World Cup finals, it said.
The following day, Lee is scheduled to head to the ski resort of Davos to attend
the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), becoming the first South
Korean president to attend the global gathering. Lee participated in the
so-called Davos Forum in 2006 when he was mayor of Seoul.
Lee plans to give a special address on the G-20 summit, which will be held in the
South Korean capital in November.
The speech, titled "Seoul G-20: Summit Priorities and Challenges," will focus on
South Korea's vision for new global governance and the role of G-20 after the
ongoing economic crisis ends, Lee's aides said.
"The Davos Forum will be President Lee's debut stage as the president of a chair
country of this year's G-20 summit," said Kim Sang-hyup, presidential secretary
for future vision.
Lee will also be participating in a plenary session about effective global
governance, he added.
The theme of this year's Davos meeting, slated for Jan. 27-31, is "Improve the
State of the World: Rethink, Redesign, Rebuild." Around 2,500 global political
and business leaders are expected to attend the meeting, the Geneva-based WEF
said.
British public broadcaster BBC and U.S.-based global cable news channel CNN plan
to hold in-depth interviews with Lee in Davos to shed light on his push to bring
South Korea to the center of the international community, the official said.
In their summit in New Delhi on Tuesday, the president and Indian Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh agreed to elevate their countries' relations to a "strategic
partnership" and seek to double two-way trade volume to US$30 billion within the
next five years.
They also agreed to start government-level talks on signing a pact on the
peaceful use of nuclear energy, in what may be a prelude to cooperation in the
construction of atomic power stations in India.
