Japan's tech trade level 8 times higher than S. Korea's: think tank

SEOUL, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) -- Japan's technology trade level was eight times higher
than South Korea's in 2007, a local economic think tank said in a report
Wednesday.

According to the report by the Hyundai Research Institute, the ratio measuring
South Korea's technology imports against its exports came to 0.43 in 2007, while
Japan's was 3.29.
South Korea's technology exports and imports amounted to US$2.2 billion and $5.1
billion, respectively, in the same period.
The ratio in technology trade is calculated by dividing the value of technology
exports by technology imports, the institute said.
South Korea's ratio of investment in research and development against its
manufacturing industry's total production of added value reached 9 percent in
2007, compared with Japan's 11 percent. But it surpassed Germany's 7.6 percent
during the same year, the report said.
South Korea's labor productivity per capita and global market share were far
below those of Japan and Germany, it said.
