Korean tourists rescued after being stranded in Peru
SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- The foreign ministry in Seoul said Friday that
Peruvian authorities have rescued all of the 34 South Korean tourists who were
stranded near the archaeological site Machu Picchu.
The Koreans and hundreds of other tourists from other countries had been trapped
at a train station near the mountainous site due to four days of heavy rains,
prompting the Peruvian government to mobilize helicopters to conduct rescue
operations.
Ministry officials in Seoul said the South Koreans have been rescued over three
days and that none showed health problems after they were airlifted out of the
troubled area.
"Rescue operations were conducted promptly after the Peruvian military provided
support with helicopters, and the Koreans currently have no health problems," an
official said.
