S. Korea's population to top 50 mln: ministry

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's official population is expected to top
50 million at the end of this month following a recent law revision that allows
people without a permanent address to be included in the population statistics,
the government said Friday.

The nation's population of registered residents stood at 49,773,145 as of the end
of last year, according to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.
The population is estimated to increase to about 50,062,000 at the end of
January, when under the revision of the relevant law, the government will add
289,000 people who have their resident registrations canceled for various
reasons, the ministry said.
The government releases demographic statistics on a monthly basis.
