he is open to a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il any time, even this
year, if conditions are created for peace on the peninsula and a resolution to
the nuclear crisis.
"I am prepared to meet (North Korea's leader) Chairman Kim Jong-il any time," Lee
said in an interview with the BBC, a British public broadcaster, using the
official title of the North's supreme leader, chairman of the National Defense
Commission. "I think the two sides should have dialogue with their minds open for
cooperation and reconciliation."

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of
computer memory chips and flat screens said Friday that it posted record
quarterly sales and profits in the fourth quarter of 2009 from a year earlier,
thanks to the better-than-expected performance of its chips and panel businesses.
Operating profit reached 3.7 trillion won (US$3.19 billion) in the three months
to December, compared with an operating loss of 740 billion won in the same
quarter of the previous year, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's No. 2 carmaker,
reported Friday its largest-ever annual profits for 2009, helped by a weak Korean
currency and global efforts to boost auto demand.
Kia's full-year net profit swelled nearly 12-fold to 1.45 trillion won (US$1.25
billion), the company said in a statement. Shrugging off the global auto
industry's worst downturn in decades, it increased market share in the United
States and China.

S. Korea's population to top 50 mln: ministry
SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's official population is expected to top
50 million at the end of this month following a recent law revision that allows
people without a permanent address to be included in the population statistics,
the government said Friday.
The nation's population of registered residents stood at 49,773,145 as of the end
of last year, according to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.

No. 2 mobile carrier, said Friday that its net profit rose 14.8 percent in 2009

Net profit reached 516.5 billion won (US$448.6 million) for all of 2009, compared
with 449.8 billion won a year ago, KT said in a regulatory filing.

to stand on the Olympic podium in the speed skating event.
When Lee Kang-seok captured bronze in the men's 500 meter event at the 2006 Turin
Winter Olympics, he claimed just the second medal in the event since Kim Yoon-man
took silver in the 1,000m race at the 1992 Albertville Games.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (Yonhap) -- The United States said Thursday that it has not
yet confirmed a report that a second American citizen is being detained in North
Korea, in addition to a U.S. activist held there after sneaking across the
Chinese border on Christmas Day.
"We've asked our protecting power, Sweden, to inquire of the DPRK about this
report," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said. "It's obviously
something we take seriously. At this point, we haven't got any specific
information to confirm that, but it is entirely possible."
