S. Korea set to host int'l population conference in 2013

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is set to host a global population
conference in 2013, providing a chance for global experts to discuss how to
tackle falling birth rates and the quickly changing demographic landscape of each
nation, the health ministry said Friday.

The decision to hold the International Population Conference in South Korea's
southern port city of Busan was made in a meeting convened by the International
Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) in Paris on Thursday, the
ministry said. It will be the 27th conference of its kind.
The conference is an academic gathering held every four years to provide a chance
for the world's renowned experts on population-related issues to exchange views
on pending problems and propose future policy directions for the international
community.
The South Korean city of Busan won the bidding competition with Australia's
Adelaide and Canada's Vancouver after submitting its final proposal to host the
event in December, the ministry said.
The official announcement for the venue will be made after the IUSSP completes
its on-site inspection in February, which is a process to confirm the details of
the city's proposal, it added.
