S. Korean team to depart for Haiti for medical aid
SEOUL, Jan. 30 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean medical team was set to depart for
Haiti on Saturday to provide medical aid to the quake-stricken Caribbean nation,
officials from the team said.
The 15-member team consisting of doctors, nurses and pharmacists from the Korean
Medical Association and the Red Cross will depart for Port-au-Prince, Haiti's
capital, later in the day.
The team will stay in Haiti for 12 days to provide medical relief to the
devastated nation and a secondary team will take over operations afterwards for
about the same period of time.
The groups plan to dispatch a total of some 80 relief workers in four,
back-to-back relief operations.
Haiti was hit Jan. 12 by a massive 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which reportedly
killed more than 150,000 people and destroyed a third of the buildings in the
capital. Seoul is considering sending about 220 peacekeeping troops to the
country.
