Number of licensed female drivers in Korea tops 10 million
SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) -- The number of South Korean women holding a driver's
license topped the landmark 10 million figure at the end of last year, reflecting
the growing social roles played by women, the National Police Agency and the
Driver's License Agency said Sunday.
The number of licensed female drivers totaled 10,004,926 as of Dec. 31, marking a
growth of about 300,000 from a year earlier, according to the two agencies in
charge of issuing a driver's license here.
Women with driving licenses accounted for 38.7 percent of the nation's total
license holders, they said, adding the figure also marked 40 percent of the
nation's female population of 24.8 million.
"The population of licensed female drivers is growing remarkably probably as a
result of their expanding social roles," a police official said.
