Campbell to visit S. Korea this week
SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) -- Kurt Campbell, U.S. assistant secretary of state for
Asia and Pacific affairs, plans to visit South Korea this week to discuss the
North Korean nuclear issue, government officials said Sunday.
Campbell, who is scheduled to stay in Korea from Tuesday until Thursday, plans to
meet Seoul's top nuclear envoy, Wi Sung-lac, to discuss the North Korean nuclear
issue amid a flurry of efforts to bring Pyongyang back to the six-way nuclear
negotiations.
"His visit is part of a regional tour in Northeast Asia. The visit is expected to
mark occasions to check pending issues between the two countries and to consult
measures related to the North Korean nuclear issue," a foreign ministry official
said.
Campbell also plans to meet South Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Yong-joon
to delve into issues, including the relocation of U.S. forces here and a free
trade agreement between Seoul and Washington.
Before heading to Seoul, the top U.S. diplomat for East Asia will visit Japan on
Monday and Tuesday.
