Local sales of Samsung, LG handsets up sharply in January

By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Yonhap) -- The world's second-largest handset maker Samsung
Electronics Co. said Monday that its monthly handset sales in the domestic market
increased sharply from a month ago, thanks to improved sales in smartphones.

Samsung said it sold 1.2 million units in January, claiming a 57.1 percent share
of the domestic handset market. In December, Samsung handsets accounted for 48.7
percent of the market, falling below 50 percent for the first time.
LG Electronics Inc., the world's No. 3 handset maker, came in at No. 2, selling
445,000 units in the same period, which accounted for a 21.7 percent market
share.
Samsung's aggressive marketing efforts toward corporate customers helped lift
sales of smartphones, Samsung said in a statement. The accumulated sales of its
smartphone Omnia series topped 450,000 units, it added.
Apple Inc., which released its iPhone through KT Corp. in the local market in
December, sold about 100,000 units in January, with its accumulated sales
reaching 300,000 units, a KT official said by phone.
The size of the domestic handset market is derived by the number of handsets
shipped by manufacturers to the nation's three mobile carriers.
