Ex-CNN bureau chief begins work as G-20 spokeswoman
By Lee Chi-dong
SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Yonhap) -- Sohn Jie-ae, former chief of U.S.-based news
broadcaster CNN's Seoul bureau, began her new job Monday as spokeswoman for South
Korea's presidential committee for the G-20 summit to be held here in November,
vowing to do her best to publicize the country's strengths.
She said that from her experience working with a foreign media outlet South Korea
has been undervalued despite its accomplishments and potential.
"I will make all-out efforts for the successful hosting of the G-20 summit," she
told reporters, adding that international awareness of South Korea's rapid
democratization and economic development needs to be enhanced.
"I would like to help South Korea be recognized rightly and appropriately in the
international community," she said.
Sohn worked as head of the 24-hour cable news channel's Seoul office since it was
opened in 1995.
She was still guarded about the future of the office amid rumors that CNN plans
to shut or scale down its operations as part of restructuring efforts.
"I don't know about the issue," she said.
