SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has said his immediate ambition is to
end his people's dependence on corn for subsistence and feed them rice and wheat
products, state media said Monday.
"I'm the most heartbroken by the fact that our people are still living on corn.
What I must do now is to feed them white rice, bread and noodles generously," he
was quoted as saying in the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling
Workers' Party.

SEOUL -- South Korea's consumer prices grew at the fastest pace in nine months in
January as prices of agricultural, dairy and fishery products increased, a report
showed Monday.
According to the report by Statistics Korea, the consumer price index rose 3.1
percent last month from a year earlier, accelerating from a 2.8 percent on-year
advance the previous month.

Senior diplomats from S. Korea, China and Japan to hold talks
BEIJING -- Senior diplomats from South Korea, China and Japan were to hold talks
in Beijing later Monday to discuss pending regional issues, including
preparations for a third tripartite summit slated for later this year in South
Korea, officials said Monday.
South Korea's Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Yong-joon, his Chinese counterpart Hu
Zhengyue and Japanese counterpart Sasae Kenichiro were to discuss ways to
increase cooperation between the three countries and implement a joint statement
adopted at the end of the previous trilateral summit held in Beijing last
October, said the officials.

Seoul as it seeks dialogue with the South.

the latest sign that the nation's automakers are emerging from the global auto
industry's worst downturn in decades, according to data released Monday.
The nation's five carmakers, led by Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia
Motors Corp., sold a total of 512,457 units last month, compared with 312,528
units sold in the same period a year earlier, when auto sales plunged amid the
global financial crisis.
