Farm cooperative exports eggs to Hong Kong

SEOUL, Feb. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's farm cooperative shipped out 40,000 eggs
to Hong Kong on Tuesday after meeting the special administrative region's
quarantine requirements, the cooperative said.
The eggs came from a farm in Yeongcheon, 344 kilometers southeast of Seoul, the
National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (Nonghyup) said.
The cooperative, with over 2.4 million members, said the eggs were checked for
freshness and minimum use of antibiotics by Hong Kong authorities late last year
that allowed orders to be placed.
"Jusco Mart and UNY Department Store in Hong Kong will sell the eggs with efforts
underway to win over more buyers," Nonghyup said in a statement.
The cooperative has been pushing for the sale of eggs to Hong Kong since 2008.
"The aim is to sell at least 7 million eggs to Hong Kong this year that can
generate earnings of around 1 billion won," it said.
No locally produced eggs were exported before 2009, with only small scale orders
made from private companies in Taiwan and Hong Kong last year.
