S. Korea to launch disaster center near nuclear plant
SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Yonhap) -- South Korea said Thursday that it has completed the
construction of a disaster management center near one of its nuclear power plants
to swiftly cope with any kind of calamity involving radioactive material.
The two-story building, located near the Gori power plant in the southern city of
Busan, is equipped with state-of-the art systems designed to help collect data,
allow for communication under emergency situations, protect citizens and
effectively respond when an accident takes place, the science ministry said.
The center sits on a plot of land measuring 7,823 square meters, the ministry
said. The official ceremony to mark the completion of the building will be held
on Friday.
South Korea has four nuclear power plants. Besides the one in Gori, there are two
more in Wolsong and Uljin on the east coast and the Yeonggwang plant on the west
coast. The nation, which imports almost all of its energy resources, is seeking
to construct more power plants over the next decade.
